Into The Yard
Transforming ordinary spaces into immersive experiences

This 1 week project brief was to capture and link actual locations in a compelling way that encourages exploration, addresses engagement and agency, and reveals interesting properties of a place. I was interested in how an ordinary space could be transformed into an immersive narrative and chose my backyard as the primary location. The backyard was a shared space with a family living upstairs and was full of children's toys. The deeper you go into the yard the more strange objects you would find and it always felt like a mysterious place. My goal for this project was to create a linear narrative where the further you go into the yard the more distorted reality becomes. Using the Google Street View app I was able to capture photospheres and edited them in Photoshop to create different effects. The final virtual reality experience was created using InstaVR.
The experience starts outside the gate that leads into the backyard. This scene uses recorded ambient audio from the street to make everything feel ordinary.
When you enter the gate, The visual style begins to change and a heart beat is overlayed with the ambient audio to add a sense of suspense.
As you go deeper into the yard, visuals become more vibrant and a binaural beats soundtrack replaces the ambient audio to make the user feel like they are further disconnecting from reality.
In the furthest corner of the yard the visuals and audio are the most intense. You are confronted by a mysterious being that transports you to a new location.
You appear in a monotone forest where the mysterious beings surround you. A ringing sound is used to create a sense of shock and disorient the user.
The experience links you back to the furthest corner of the yard making the user feel like there is no escape. however, if you look closely you can find a hidden trigger that allows you to escape the yard.
